Syrian Army Launches Limited Operation in Aleppo
The Syrian Ministry of Information announced that the Syrian Arab Army, in response to attacks by the terrorist organization PKK/YPG, will launch a limited military operation in the city of Aleppo.
According to the ministry’s statement, the operation aims to halt artillery, sniper, and drone attacks, restore security to civilian neighborhoods, reopen the Aleppo–Azaz road, and protect citizens. It was also emphasized that the operation complies with international law and that priority will be given to the evacuation of civilians.
In a separate statement, the Syrian government stressed that protecting all citizens—including Kurds—is a non-negotiable national and legal responsibility, rejecting PKK/YPG claims that ethnic groups were being targeted.
The Syrian Army’s operations command reported that PKK/YPG elements opened fire to prevent civilians from leaving the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh. The army declared that the safe evacuation of civilians will be ensured and that security in these neighborhoods will soon be restored.
As clashes intensified, thousands of families fled Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh, taking shelter in mosques and temporary refuges. Eyewitnesses reported harsh living conditions in these areas, along with shortages of food and fuel.
The Independent Association of Syrian Kurds also issued a statement urging PKK/YPG not to target civilians, stressing that using people as human shields is a violation of international law.
The United Nations expressed concern over reports of civilian casualties in Aleppo and called on all parties to resume negotiations for the implementation of the March 10 agreement.
Reports indicate that since the PKK/YPG attacks began on January 6, one soldier and five civilians have been killed, while 31 others have been injured. Official institutions, schools, and universities in the city center have suspended activities, and flights at Aleppo International Airport have also been halted.
