Turkey Leads Global Agricultural Production
Turkey has achieved a prominent position in global agricultural production. The country is the world leader in seven products and ranks among the top three producers in 22 products. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Turkey cultivates 38,588,000 hectares of farmland, producing a wide range of crops including vegetables, fruits, grains, and strategic products.
Turkey is the leading global producer of hazelnuts, figs, apricots, poppy seeds, cherries, quinces, and carobs. One quarter of the world’s cherry production comes from Turkey. With 750,000 tons of apricots, Turkey ranks first, followed by Uzbekistan with 500,545 tons, Iran with 318,475 tons, Italy with 207,190 tons, and Algeria with 200,566 tons. Other major apricot producers include Afghanistan, Pakistan, France, Armenia, and Spain.
In cherry production, Turkey leads with 736,791 tons, accounting for about 25 percent of global output. Chile follows with 465,348 tons, the United States with 321,420 tons, Uzbekistan with 218,867 tons, and Iran with 144,877 tons.
Turkey also produces 356,000 tons of figs annually. Egypt ranks second with 193,058 tons, Morocco third with 119,167 tons, Algeria fourth with 116,183 tons, and Iran fifth with 73,483 tons. In hazelnut production, Turkey is far ahead with 650,000 tons, supplying more than half of the world’s total. Italy follows with 102,740 tons, the United States with 85,460 tons, Azerbaijan with 75,409 tons, and Chile with 65,647 tons.
In quince production, Turkey leads with 192,237 tons. China ranks second with 111,576 tons, Uzbekistan third with 95,654 tons, Iran fourth with 90,477 tons, and Morocco fifth with 43,523 tons. Turkey is also the top producer of carobs with 24,561 tons. Global production reached 55,929 tons, with Morocco producing 22,096 tons, Lebanon 4,188 tons, Algeria 3,424 tons, and Tunisia 813 tons.
Turkey also leads in poppy seed production with 7,922 tons. Palestine follows with 1,539 tons, Serbia with 1,079 tons, and North Macedonia with 38 tons.
In addition, Turkey ranks second in cucumber and sour cherry production, and third in pistachios, tangerines, peaches, spinach, chickpeas, apples, cranberries, watermelons, melons, leeks, peppers, tomatoes, and olives.
